Billboard: After Eminem, Can Albums By One Direction, Lady Gaga or Britney Spears Rack Up Monster Debuts?
With Eminem's new album on course for a blockbuster first week, are there any other albums left this year than can also rack up huge, half-million-plus debuts?
Yes. But that list is very short. As in: There's just one album on it: One Direction's "Midnight Memories."
As previously reported, Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" is set to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week with around 750,000 sold (through the tracking week ending Nov. 10). It will tally the second-biggest sales week of the year, after the debut of Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience," which bowed with 968,000 in March, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
According to forecasts from label sources, One Direction's "Midnight Memories," due out Nov. 25, could debut with a little over 500,000.
It's the third album from the British vocal group, and follows their last release, "Take Me Home." That set bowed with 540,000 in its first week back in November of 2012.
There are, of course, other albums due out this year that will earn significant debuts. But none -- at least at this point -- are expected to come close to the bows of Eminem and One Direction.
(You may wonder: How can industry sources forecast first-week sales for an album before it has come out? Sales projections are based on a number of indicators. They include orders from physical retailers, pre-orders on digital services like iTunes, first-week performance of comparable albums, media exposure, radio and YouTube trends for the album's singles, and so on.)
Lady Gaga's "ARTPOP" album, out on Monday, Nov. 11, may sell around 300,000 to 350,000 if early industry forecasts hold. Her last album, 2011's "Born This Way," debuted with 1.1 million sold. (However, it benefited from an Amazon MP3 offer that sold it for 99 cents on two days of its debut week. Billboard estimates that the 99 cent version resulted in 440,000 copies of the album's first-week haul.)
Also on the horizon is Britney Spears' "Britney Jean," which is scheduled for release on Dec. 3. While it's a bit early to predict what Spears will sell, industry prognosticators indicate it could start slower than her last album. Her previous release, 2011's "Femme Fatale," launched with 276,000 at No. 1.

Britney Spears Will Perform on Good Morning America!
This morning, Good Morning America announced that Britney Spears will be performing on the show on Sept. 17. Britney Spears. Performing. On live TV. All together now: AHH! IT'S BRITNEY, BITCH
"The biggest names in pop will be on @GMA--can handle this line-up?" GMA teased. Katy Perry is also scheduled to appear (tomorrow) as well as Lady Gaga (next Monday). But all we're really concerned about right now is Britney Spears.
If you're a member of the Britney Army, we don't need to tell you that Sept. 17 also happens to be the same day that the countdown on BritneySpears.com runs out. Which has to mean we are getting new music in 11 days, right?!
Being the charitable people that we are, we decided to go ahead and make a list of everything we want from Britney this era. Follow this list, Brit, and you're bound to leave every other pop star in your dust:
1. Club bangers like on Blackout.
Executive producer will.i.am said he met with Britney for months before they started recording, "I said, 'Let's talk about what you're excited about. Let's talk about things you've done in you career, what you're happy about. Let's talk about spending time with your kids, let's talk about your breakup. Let's talk about how now you're single, how independent you might feel.'" And that's what's going into this album.
3. More music videos like "Toxic."
Or really any of the iconic videos from the In The Zone era.
4. Britney-era dancing.
We know she's still got it in her, hand dancing be damned!
5. The pomp and circumstance of the Femme Fatale and Circus eras.
Say what you will about Britney's most recent albums and tours, but they were big, extravagant spectacles. And we expect that out of any pop star, so one of the biggest pop stars ever has to double deliver. Bring on the pyrotechnics!
6. Something new.
Britney is teaming with will.i.am on this album, but is bringing in a slew of other producers and songwriters too, including Sia ("The song is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Evokes SO much emotion every time I hear it. One of the most beautiful songs I have recorded in a LONG time."), Emeli Sande, William Orbit, Naughty Boy and Charli XCX. She will also reteam with Danja, who provided some of the best tracks off Blackout. We want fresh new beats, stuff we've never heard from her before.
7. Something controversial.
It wouldn't be Britney without a little controversy, right?
8. Something fierce.
Like we even have to ask.
Mostly, we just want to feel like Britney wants to be working, recording, performing, promoting, touring, etc. We want to see her joking and having fun and taking control over the business of Britney Spears.
If we get all that, we'll be like:

1. Club bangers like on Blackout.
Arguably Britney's most iconic album, musically speaking.
2. But more personal songs, too.
Luckily for us, Britney has said that it's going to be her "most personal album ever :)" and an album for her "diehard fans." (That'd be us.)Executive producer will.i.am said he met with Britney for months before they started recording, "I said, 'Let's talk about what you're excited about. VOTE VH1: The 8 Greatest Woman In Pop
On Friday night, we aired the last installment of our five-part, 100 Greatest Women in Music series. If you happened to miss the countdown, it’s spoiler alert time: VH1 crowned Madonna as the greatest female artist of the last 20 years. While it’s tough to argue with the musical legacy of Madonna, we received an incredible number of comments, emails, and tweets from our VH1 audience asking about their ability to participate in this countdown. Well, we listened and worked to put together the following bracket-style tournament of The 8 Greatest Women In Pop where you, the reader, will be able to select the most accomplished female artist in the pop music game right now. (Sorry, Adele fans: We figured that since she just swept the Grammys, she has enough awards for the moment, so we left her out of this tournament).
Our tournament will run today through next Monday, February 27, and our first round matchups are pretty outrageous: Lady Gaga vs. Madonna, Britney Spears vs. Rihanna, Katy Perry vs. Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez vs. Beyoncé. One tiny administrative note: Be sure and get your first-round vote in by 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, 2/22.

Rolling Stones named "How I Roll" best song of 2011
1. Britney Spears, “How I Roll”
Britney hooks up with the Swedish production duo Bloodshy and Avant, who also gave her “Toxic” in 2004 and “Piece of Me” in 2007, and like the first two chapters of the trilogy, it’s fiendishly inventive girl noise. Every sound effect that jumps out of the mix – Brit slurring the word “speakerrrr,” digital finger-snaps, a real beatbox pretending to be a human beatbox – builds the tension. There’s even a plot: An ordinary girl sits in her lonely room, dreaming of party lights far away, wishing she could escape to a place where she can show her kneesocks and drink tequila on the rocks, where there’s music and there’s people and they’re young and alive. But the mean old world won’t let her break free, so she just sings along with the machines until she turns into a machine herself, because only the beat understands her. There’s your story of pop music right there.
2. Big Sean featuring Nicki Minaj, "Dance (A$$) (Remix)"
3. Beyoncé, "Countdown"
4. EMA, "California"
5. Bon Iver, "Beth/Rest"

OMFG Music named Till The World Ends best song of the year!!!
1. "Till The World Ends" - Britney Spears
Adele captured your soul, Gaga stole your innocence, but Britney Spears made you go wild on the dance floor like no other song did in 2011. With "Till The World Ends," Britney Spears out-Ke$ha-ed Ke$ha herself, making her 2010 dance-pop dominance seem like just a warm up for the return of Britney Spears. You can try all yo want, but the thumping perfection of the pristinely polished Dr. Luke production and the insane catchiness of Britney's signature "woah, oh, oh, oh oh, ooh's" in "Till The World Ends," will never, ever, ever leave you. Listen to it once, and it will be stuck in your head for weeks.
2. "Rolling in the Deep" - Adele
3. "Niggas in Paris" - Kanye West and Jay-Z
4. "No Light, No Light" - Florence + The Machine
5. "The Edge of Glory" - Lady Gaga
6. "Super Bass" - Nicki Minaj

AOL named Till The World Ends the best song of the year!!!
1. 'Till the World Ends,' Britney Spears
After a year of uprisings, occupations and riots, no song quite captured 2011's end-of-days vibe like Brit's biggest, boldest epic yet. Sure, the charts have been filled with similar electro bangers since Britney herself ushered in pop's rave-ival during her 'Blackout' days, but 'Til The World Ends' outshines 'em with the sinister euphoria of an exploding sun. And yes, it was better than the remix. -- Joshua Ostroff
2. 'Someone Like You,' Adele
3. 'Party Rock Anthem,' LMFAO
4. 'Call Your Girlfriend,' Robyn
5. 'The Edge of Glory,' Lady Gaga
6. 'Super Bass,' Nicki Minaj
7. 'Mr. Know It All,' Kelly Clarkson
8. 'Hello Feat. Dragonette,' Martin Solveig
9. 'Love You Like a Love Song,' Selena Gomez
10. 'We Found Love,' Rihanna
11. 'Stereo Hearts,' Gym Class Heroes
12. 'Price Tag,' Jessie J
13. 'Never Say Never,' Justin Bieber
14. 'Give Me Everything,' Pitbull
15. 'Best Thing I Never Had,' Beyoncé
16. 'Pumped Up Kicks,' Foster the People
17. 'Blow,' Ke$ha
18. 'Take Care Feat. Rhianna,' Drake
19. 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),' Katy Perry
20. 'Without You' David Guetta Feat. Usher
21. 'This City,' Patrick Stump

MuuMuse named Femme Fatale best album of the year!!!
The music has never stopped being incredible.
From the rallying chants of the Ke$ha-penned “Till The World Ends” to the final heartfelt cries of “Criminal,” Spears’ seventh studio album, Femme Fatale, is a ceaselessly catchy record filled with explosive, surging uptempo cuts (“I Wanna Go”), quirky mid-tempos (“How I Roll”) and racy odes to ex-sexin’ (“Inside Out”) that remain fresh and innovative to this day.
By employing both longtime collaborators (Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Bloodshy & Avant), as well as some relative newcomers to the Spears circle (Fraser T. Smith, Will.I.Am), the reigning pop princess dove deep into modern club beats, weird Swede-pop textures, and gritty dubstep influences to craft a cutting-edge collection of future-pop tunes–all while maintaining that unmistakably “Britney” sound.
The dubstep breakdown of “Hold It Against Me” alone–the album’s lead single which immediately rocketed to #1 upon release in January (and remains as fresh to the ears as the day it debuted)–has since led to an entire wave of dubstep-infused Top 40 pop, now heard on songs like Flo Rida‘s “Good Feeling” and Rihanna‘s “You Da One.”
Femme Fatale celebrates the very essence of pop music, affirming for the seventh time why Britney Spears is the ultimate pop star of our generation. But she’s Britney (bitch), and none of this should come as much of a surprise. After all, there’s a certain catchphrase I coined from back in the very beginning of the year that will forever ring true…
